Fire in the Sky review
This modest sci-fi movie treads the same earth as Communion, but more purposefully. The selfish community of Snowflake, Arizona, is thrown into ambiguousness when loggers proffer from the forest claiming at one of their number has been taken away in a spacecraft. A sceptical special investigator (Garner) shares the locals’ doubts, believing the story is a cover for matricide…until the missing man (Sweeney) turns up with his own incredible information. The symbolism is familiar: scientific experiments in which orifices are penetrated, and womblike interiors representing primal fears about the integrity of the body. Unhesitatingly this is inner, not outer lay out. Even so, the handling of the small-town common dynamics, the media circus and the scary significant effects victual an engrossing build-up and comforting pay-off.
